Diagnostic Imaging in the Peri-Anesthetic Patient: Assessment of Anesthetic Risk and Complications

This live interactive medical program for veterinary professionals will focus on the important role that diagnostic imaging plays in assessing anesthetic risk and peri-anesthetic complications in dogs and cats. This course will review clinically relevant cardiopulmonary and other thoracic imaging findings, as well as anesthetic, ventilatory, and procedure-related complications. Through a case-based presentation, emphasis will be placed on recognition and interpretation of imaging findings, including aspiration pneumonia, atelectasis, pulmonary edema, pneumothorax, pneumomediastinum, barotrauma, and airway or device malposition to optimize peri-anesthetic patient management.

Learning Objectives

1. Recognize and characterize clinically relevant cardiopulmonary and other thoracic imaging findings that may influence pre-anesthetic risk assessment and peri-anesthetic patient management.
2. Identify characteristic imaging findings associated with anesthetic, ventilatory, and procedure-related complications, including aspiration, atelectasis, pulmonary edema, pneumothorax, pneumomediastinum, and barotrauma.
3. Apply a systematic approach to the interpretation of diagnostic imaging in patients with suspected peri-anesthetic complications and integrate imaging findings with the clinical circumstances.

Anesthetic Management of Common Cardiovascular Diseases

This live interactive medical program for veterinary professionals will focus on the key features of anesthetic management of common cardiovascular diseases. The presentation will review mitral valve regurgitation, dilated cardiomyopathy, hypertrophic and restrictive cardiomyopathy, and pericardial effusion. This course will also provide practical strategies for peri-anesthetic planning, hemodynamic goal setting, and drug selection, in addition to recognition and treatment of cardiovascular instability to optimize patient outcomes.

1. Key pathophysiologic and hemodynamic features of common cardiovascular diseases and how they influence anesthetic risk.
2. How to develop an anesthetic plan based on the specific cardiovascular disease, including appropriate hemodynamic goals and strategies to maintain cardiovascular stability throughout anesthesia.
3. Recognize and manage common complications under anesthesia related to cardiovascular disease.
