Matthew E. Tonero, DVM, Residency Trained in Internal Medicine, is a veterinarian at MedVet Asheville, where he has been part of the team since 2026.
Dr. Tonero attended Pennsylvania State University, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry and molecular biology. He then earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Following veterinary school, Dr. Tonero completed an internship in rotating medicine and surgery at Texas A&M University Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital before completing his residency in internal medicine at the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital.
Although he enjoys all aspects of internal medicine, Dr. Tonero is particularly interested in diagnosing and managing complex medical conditions. He values the opportunity to help relieve his patients’ discomfort while also supporting their families during times of uncertainty. He also enjoys the diagnostic process, working through complex conditions to better understand a patient’s health concerns and develop an effective treatment plan. Dr. Tonero has co-authored peer-reviewed publications in veterinary pharmacology and gastroenterology, reflecting his commitment to advancing patient care through research.
When not caring for patients, Dr. Matthew Tonero enjoys escape rooms, exploring different restaurants, hiking, puzzles, strategy games, and traveling with his wife. He also enjoys spending time with their four dogs: two German Shepherd Dogs, a Golden Retriever/Australian Shepherd mix, and an All-American Kennel Dog.
